| The Absorption of Time And Illusion |
| by Sai Grafio |
| Customarily, we are used to thinking about the end of time as if there were an end point in eschatology where time ceases or ends. Consciousness of time is not the same as consciousness of infinity or the ever present consciousness of now. The past as a function of time tells us that in those distant times, events occurred and that the characters or players in those events also disappeared in history; ergo, we all have a collective memory stating that this history existed in the past; the so called end of time maybe just the collective awareness that this is merely illusion. Pure existence or being is always in the ever present moment for to divide existence or being is to deny perennial being. The perennial wisdom teaches that being (The Self) is Satchitananda or being, consciousness and bliss. The center of the galaxy (Hunab ku) is not unlike our center where time collapses into the infinity forces. The Bhagavad Gita quotes Krishna saying, “Having pervaded the entire universe with a portion of myself, I remain.” The great movement of time and measurement is exacted out to the ends of space, yet ever remains itself. No matter how compartmentalized we are in our fragmented identities, however many bodies we inhabit on earth, hyperspace or in various lifetimes we always remain that Self which is ever existent. No matter how much time exists there is only one moment; time goes from the present to the present. What we call present is every man’s now. Whenever we think of a past or a future, all these times are present. The concept that time has no time is absolute timelessness. Time seems to be beyond but it is now; seems to be over there but it is here. Outside of the eternal now is no central Self. There seems to be a convergence about what the ancient Mayans believed and what modern scientist are discovering about our galaxy today; however, the biggest difference in what the modern scientist believe about linear time and what the Mayans thought about time. The Mayans believed that time flows in a circle. They believed that time comes out of the Hunab Ku and is controlled by it. In the Bhagavad Gita Krishna appears with Arjuna in the Battle of Kurushetra. Here the concept of linear time breaks down as Krishna explains to Arjuna before the battle that he has already destroyed the enemy but that Arjuna should fight nevertheless because it is his dharma as a soldier to do so. Shetra is the field and Kuru is the knower of the field. This implies that Krishna as the knower already know the outcome because as the ultimate divine principle he wrote the script. Arjuna is riding at chariot pulled by three horses and Krishna is standing behind him. Krishna represents the God Self; Arjuna the personality and the three horses represent the combined energy of the personality-physical, astral and mental. Arjuna is in a predicament because he cannot control the horses and Krishna says to give the reins to him. The allegory is simple: When the ego gives up control to the God Self then victory is assured. The problem of the ego (Self separate from God) is that it functions as a doer in linear time without recognition that there is only one doer. In our dream (maya) of separation from God we believe ourselves to be a separate doer; ergo, time is a function or maya or illusion. In the movie “Waking Life” two young men are discussing waking up from time or illusion. One young man says to the other that time is saying no to God. Likewise, John on the island of Patmos, saw that time will be no more; when waking from a dream all illusions cease. The Course In Miracles teaches that we didn’t separate from God in some distant past millions of years ago but in an instant. In a “holy instant” we can return to God.
